Free Week. It's that magical time in Austin when you can hear live music for free all week. More and more clubs join in each year. It is also a time that I plan to go out every night and barely make it to one show. Sad. I'm just usually strung out from the holiday stress and beginning to think about prepping for the new semester. But enough with the excuses. I had planned to see Girl in a Coma at Frank on Wed., Feb. 4, but alas, they are just too popular, and the space was too small. I interviewed them on the Gibson Bus during SXSW back in 2009, and knew they were something special back then.

So a good alternative was to swing by Antone's around the corner for a strong lineup of local acts, all I had not seen before. Stereo is a Lie is a great pop group and Oh Look Out is the off shoot of an Austin band on break, Built By Snow, also poppy, lots of fun. The headliner was Equals, an instrumental act getting lots of attention on the local scene. Fun time, glad to get out of the house, see some people and catch some great music. And, I started my resolution of checking out new acts!

Here's my year-end wrap up of the shows I saw in 2011. I didn't attend as many shows as I have in years past, and I will seek to remedy that in 2012. But it was still a stellar year, because I got to see so many of my favorites. Any year that includes Evan Dando, Juliana Hatfield, Matthew Sweet, Liz Phair, Wilco, Pete Yorn and multiple appearances for Old 97's, as well as great times with favorite local artists, has to be special!

Wilco, ACL Live at Moody Theater, Dec. 1

It had been such a long time since I had seen Wilco, not once in 2010, having to go all the way back to the Cedar Park show in Oct. 2009. So, I was due. It was extra special to find out that Jeff Tweedy would be interviewed for an Overheard with Evan Smith taping, so I made sure I was in line early for that one. Such a charming and insightful discussion. Make sure you see it when it is aired or appears online.

I missed the ACL taping, but got to see their regular show at ACL Live, which was quite amazing. Their catalog is so huge, but they managed to play things from across the decades. Opening with the melancholy "Reservations,' then launching into the art rock of "Art of Almost," sounds crazy, but set just the perfect tone of contradiction and experimentation. Later it was "I'm the Man Who Loves You," "Pot Kettle Black," "She's a Jar," and even "Box Full of Letters," plus many, many more. Nick Lowe opened, with a special, quiet, acoustic set, then he joined Wilco to close out the show with a rousing "Cruel To Be Kind." Hope I don't have to wait two years to see them again!

The Value of 1000 True Fans

I have long evangelized to and annoyed folks with this idea of 1000 True Fans. It was first discussed by author Kevin Kelly on his Technium Blog in 2008. Basically, his idea is simple. All an artist needs is 1000 true fans, give or take some details (like number of people in your band, etc.), and he or she can maintain a career. This idea was extended on Hypebot.com in their article about The Rise of the Musical Middle Class. Granted, we are not talking Gaga money here, but if music is the way you want to make your living, then this was a way to do it. If you have true fans, they will support you through anything. They will buy your music, come to your shows, buy your merch, talk about you online, wear your t-shirts, do your marketing for you... They will follow you through music industry fluctuations, label negotiations, lean periods. I have been a true fan of several acts, and I know the enthusiasm and sincerity in many fan communities. So, it all made sense.

Then I started hearing about all the different ways that artists could "crowd fund" their activities. Sites like Kickstarter, Pledge Music and Patronism started popping up, making it easy for artists to promote projects directly to fans. It was a beautiful thing.

So, I was thrilled when I learned that one of my favorite artists, Rhett Miller, was experimenting with a crowd-funded project. Rhett is the lead singer of Old 97's, but he launched his own Pledge Music campaign a few weeks ago, during Thanksgiving weekend. The project is for a new solo CD, not a 97's recording. And in just over two days (over a holiday weekend, mind you), he reached more than 100% of his goal. The pledges were coming in with blazing speed there for a while, really demonstrating the power of his fan base. Rhett didn't disclose the amount he was seeking, but my guess is that it was substantial, something in the $20k-$25k ballpark (completely a guess on my part), with the idea that he could actually achieve 200% of his goal throughout the two-month campaign. He set up a charity component, so that a percentage of the proceeds after 100% go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Northeast Texas Chapter, so the campaign continues. Things slowed down a little after the initial goal was met, but currently Rhett is at 141% of his goal, gaining contributions from 658 fans. I think this is a model use of the service. Rhett's been working for close to 20 years as a performing musician and has developed a strong and avid fan base. While the band has label support (and any limitations that might go along with that kind of deal), he wanted to explore some of his options for his solo work (this will be his fifth solo outing), and find ways to do it on his own. And, he was just launching his own label Maximum Sunshine. I'm guessing, when all is said and done, when Rhett reaches 200% of his goal, we'll see contributions from about 1000 of his true fans, a definite confirmation of that theory.

Look at it this way. Rhett has more than 16,000 followers on Twitter. If only 10% of those people each gave him $20 (just above the cost of a new CD), that would be $32,000. Think of it as buying the CD in advance, WHICH ALL TRUE FANS ARE GOING TO DO ANYWAY.

I have spoken to lots of musicians over the years about this topic. Some are tentative about it. They feel that it is begging for money or that it might indicate that they had few other options. But it's the new age, folks. It's not begging any more than marketing is begging people to buy your CD. It's actually a much more sincere engagement of your fans than the "persuasion" of a huge promotional blitz. And, it is just one of the options that an artist can now use, giving them more control if they seek it. I see this model working on a number of levels. Obviously, established artists, like Rhett, with passion projects and other ideas, should use the power of the fan base they so long developed and earned. New artists, who are just coming up, can use crowd-sourced projects with a growing, avid fan base as a bargaining point if they are seeking label support. And, anyone in this model can avoid labels and/or management, if they so choose, if those options don't seem as lucrative or flexible as a self-funded project.

So, while some think it's risky, I think it is a big win. It's cutting out the middle man when you no longer need him.

This strategy doesn't work for everyone. You have to have the 1000 (or so) true fans. And you don't get them overnight. But here are some things that I have been thinking about in that regard:

Engage your fan base and develop a community around your music - this is happening anyway. Fans go to your shows. They communicate online. They talk about how much they love you. They meet each other online, become friends, travel to shows around the country, meetup in person. Hell, some of them even get married to one another. Why not? They share a very passionate hobby... a true love of a music artist... It only makes sense that these connections would occur, often without a band or artist doing a thing. But if you stoke that community a little, provide some incentive, create events and destinations, offer opportunities for fans to connect, then you are aiding the community that is being developed. You don't need a heavy hand, and you probably want to avoid doing too much. Let the community be what it is going to be. But a little attention here and there can make a difference.
Be accessible online -- and maybe even sometimes offline. Granted, every artist has a different persona and a brand they want to portray, whether it's online or off. If you want to be an aloof hipster, this may not work as well for you, but in most cases, fans want to connect with the artists in some meaningful way, and social media makes it easy. That's why those promotional tweets that only say "Come to my gig" or those that are obviously being made by management or a PR agency aren't buying you any goodwill with fans. You share a little of yourself in your music, why not share a little in a tweet or facebook update from time to time? Talk about what you are doing, inspiration, projects you are working on, books you are reading, movies you like. Show humor, if you are humorous...intelligence, if you are intelligent... but be yourself and people will respond. I think Rhett is great at this. He started out on Twitter in 2009, and his natural tendency to care about and connect with people emerged. I don't think he put much thought into exactly how he would use the platform, but he knew that interactions with fans could be important. And fun. Rhett's also done a great job experimenting with YouTube videos, offering fans a slice of his life as a touring musician. Plus, Rhett's often accessible after shows, signing autographs and chatting with fans. It's a natural part of his character.

Be awesome - this is really the most important thing. If you aren't great, you probably won't have many fans. And if you don't have fans, you probably won't be able to create much of a community around your music. The music industry is hard, and there is competition all around. So, you still have to carve time out to work on your craft, what you love to do in the first place. Don't get overwhelmed by all this social interaction that you are suddenly expected to do. Focus on the music, and then let the interactions happen. The tools are mostly free. Think about authentic ways that you can communicate with fans, and then build that into your routine. But that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice anything about yourself as an artist.

So, I'm not a musician, and you can tell me I don't know what I am talking about. But I do know how social media has helped in my own career as an academic and as someone who blogs about music. It's an extension of what I do, not an entirely new line of activity that I needed to find time and energy to execute. Use tools that you think can add value, and avoid those that do not.

Once you are ready to test out a crowd-funding project, take a look at the different services, check out their offerings, and create an authentic campaign. Really put some time and thought into the perks you offer. In most cases, the minimum people receive is a download of the project with an advance release. I have seen artists offer all kinds of things beyond that, from equipment, to clothing, to VIP access, to special events and performances. Think about funding amounts that make you comfortable, and don't agree to any that don't. Offer a variety at different price points, and don't be surprised when someone takes you up on that $3000 producer credit or $5000 for a house party. Those people are out there and many of them want to help you. If they love you :-)

Personally, I see tons of potential in this model. Check out Rhett's Pledge Music campaign and see what he's got going on there. I also support a few other artists who have executed campaigns including Salim Nourallah, Miles Zuniga, Cotton Mather and Quiet Company. Support them or your own favorite artist if they embark on a crowd-funding project. Their music means a lot to us. Now we have an opportunity to show them just how much. And it's fun to be along for the ride.

Zeale and Nakia, Mass Comm Week, Oct. 19, 2011

What a pleasure it was to be able to speak to two of Austin's up and coming artists during Mass Comm Week. TX State student, Valin Zamarron, better known as Zeale, did a performance and then talked about using social media to promote his career. (The performance was great, but the recording of it was not, so I sadly was unable to include it here). Zeale's got a bright career ahead, so check him out as soon as you can.

After Zeale, Austin musician Nakia joined us. Nakia was a finalist on the summer hit NBC's The Voice. Nakia has done some great things using social media to promote his career and to help him on the show. He even got discovered for the show because of a video on YouTube. He had some really fascinating things to share about his experiences.

We were lucky that these two talented artists could join us in San Marcos.

Matthew Sweet, Rams Head On Stage, Annapolis, Oct. 27, 2011

Ah, serendipity. karma. I love it when I travel for one thing and then another fabulous thing can be attached. I actually get disappointed if I can't find a great show in a town I am visiting. Well, nothing could have been more exciting than when I found out that Matthew Sweet was playing in Maryland at the same time I was attending the Journalism Interactive Conference in College Park. Sweet is performing his classic album Girlfriend, front to back, to celebrate the 20th anniversary. It is definitely up there in my top 5 albums, infectious pop that stands the test of time. Matthew's voice is still angelic, surrounded by psychedelic licks and distortion. I was very happy to be there.

But I forgot my regular camera. So photos are blurry and video is sort of acceptable. Girlfriend is top loaded, with Divine Intervention, I've Been Waiting and Girlfriend right off the bat, so I was still in initial euphoria before I realized those tunes were over. Luckily, my friend Stephanie Sylvester also picked up a few songs from her better vantage point. The venue, Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis, sounded great, although it's not a typical rock club. People were seated at tables, and I wanted to get up and rock. But it was an amazing time. So glad I was able to go. The conference was great, too, so all in all a fantastic weekend.

Rhett Miller made another swing through Austin, this time without his Old 97's bandmates. If you haven't seen him solo acoustic, you're missing out. He's a master at this. Pure talent and so much fun. The stripped down delivery highlights the storytelling of the songs. But don't think this is some singer-songwriter sleeper. The new Quiet Company CD We Are All Where We Belong is out (and it is stellar, check my review when the Oct Texas Music comes out), and they celebrated with not one, but two, parties. The first, which I was able to attend, was a grand evening of acoustic performances by Austin's best musicians at the ND Austin venue. It was a great night of fun and friends. I sadly had to miss the big formal CD release the next night, also at ND, but I heard it was a rager! Check them out this week at theHAAM Benefit at Whole Foods on Tuesday, or any other time you get the chance.

ACL Fest 2011, Day 3

Wow, that was a blur. It seemed to all go by so fast. It was a great festival, saw so many great bands. Sunday was a big one, with something for everyone. I loved Ryan Bingham and Hayes Carll, and I'm not even that much of a country fan. Gomez and Joseph Arthur were also great. I watched Arcade Fire from a ways back, but looks like they put on a great show. The sound was much better for them than it was the night before for Stevie Wonder.

So, expect ticket announcements for next year's fest soon and let the lineup speculation and rumors begin! Now, it's on to Fun Fun Fun, then SXSW.

The 107 degree temps weren't enough to dissuade thousands of Austin music fans from another Blues on the Green. This time it was Old 97's (with opener Suzanna Choffel) bringing the heat to Zilker Park. It was a fun night with great friends and fellow 97's aficionados.

During some of the songs, audio went out at times. The heat was just too much for the equipment apparently. But the amps always kicked back in and the 97's didn't miss a beat.

I moderated a panel last night for the Social Media Club of Austin on Music and Social Media entitled "I'm with the Band." There was an all-star lineup with a wide range of experiences that made for a lively discussion. Joining me were Jonathan Carroll of Gowalla, Daniel Senyard of Vivogig, Paul Osbon who manages the band Quiet Company, Tom Gimbel of Austin City Limits and Brad Bogus of Speak Social and the band Audio Runner. Plus, we were on the legendary stage at the old Austin City Limits studio which made for a great backdrop for the conversation.

Old 97's at La Zona Rosa, June 10, 2011

It's always a beautiful day in Austin when the Old 97's show up. The show at La Zona Rosa was their first one there in a while, and it was a rockin', sweaty night due to some weak air conditioning and a strong crowd. The 97's didn't let the heat slow them down a bit, playing a 2 hour set of classics and a few from the forthcoming Grand Theatre Vol. 2, due in early July.

They were joined on the bill by Salim Nourallah and his talented band of Joe Reyes and John Dufilho, some of my favorite people on the planet. And this was the first time I was able to check out Sarah Jaffe. She's incredibly talented.

It's a great birthday, when bands full of my favorite people come to town. Salim Nourallah is a talented Dallas musician and producer, having worked on the last several Old 97's projects, as well as a forthcoming new release of his own. I've been lucky to interview him on a few occasions (here or here or here) and have gotten to see him play many times, as you can see throughout this site.

But the fun didn't stop there. Another favorite, San Antonio's Buttercup was also on the bill, and I've interviewed them as well. They even serenaded me with Moon River. What more can a girl ask for on her birthday?! Plus the great Leatherbag also played, rounding out a fantastically fun night! If you haven't heard him yet, check him out. He's a mix of Dylan, Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed... all the good stuff. He's really one of Austin's best right now.

It was another great night of music with the boys of Quiet Company at Mohawk. Joining them was Nakia, the Austin artist of NBC's The Voice fame, for a rousing rendition of Jezebel (or 'A Song About My Friend and That Whore He Dated'). And, they played a couple new songs off of their yet to be released, by highly anticipated, new album. It was a high energy show, and you can see more and more people in the audience singing along with more of their songs. It's great to see all the fan loyalty that they are still generating. And it was great to see Nakia with all the success he's received on The Voice, having made it to the final live round of the competition for Team Cee Lo to be broadcast in June. Several of my friends have gotten together to form Austin's newest super group, Fosskit No. 5, who recently released their first CD at Cherrywood Coffeehouse on May 7. The group includes Neal Mehta (The Recliners and Halloway), John Bush (Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians), Joon-Yee Chuah on keyboards and fiddle and Bill Walter on bass. Clemency is the new CD(produced by Bush), with pop influences like The Killers and Pete Yorn, with the occasional somber touch of The Smiths and more recently, The National. The fiddle and keys add a lot of texture, bringing a modern sensibility like that of Arcade Fire. Check it out.

I'd been holding my Pete Yorn/Ben Kweller tickets for months, and it was the perfect excuse for me to crawl out of my post-SXSW malaise. It was a beautiful night for music with two fantastic performers on the bill. The opener, The Wellspring, was also pretty fantastic. Both Yorn and Kweller are two of my favorite artists. Kweller played solo, and had the enthusiastic audience in the palm of his hand, playing hits and a few new songs, announcing an upcoming release that will be on his own label. Yorn has matured so much, and the songs off the now 10-year-old debut Music for the Morning After, still hold up and remain some of my favorite songs. Enjoy these photos and videos from the night.

SXSW wrapped up for me with a bunch of favorites - an afternoon party with Okkervil River, then showcases with local bands SPEAK, Electric Touch - closing with surprise set by Soundtrack of our Lives playing acoustic in St. David's Church. SooL is a rockin' band from Sweden who I've seen several times at ACL and SXSW. They have a big sound and performance, but this set was subdued and pretty. It was a great way to see them in a different light.

SPEAK won Best Indie Band at Austin Music Awards last night, and Electric Touch and Okkervil River both have new albums, which they showcased during their sets. Check them out.

So, that does it for me. It was a crazy week. There were some mishaps and some injuries, but mostly a fantastic, exhausting, surprising, ridiculous and inspiring experience. Until next year, folks!

SXSW 2011, Friday Night

Liz Phair is one of my all-time favorites. I was so excited to hear that she'd be at SXSW. However, she ended up not having a showcase (as far as I know), but playing a few special things, like this at the IFC/Crossroads House. It was a weird setup, a big camera rig in the middle of the room, and a dude in the crowd with another giant camera. And, it was hot. But it was so worth it. Got to hear lots of my favorites. She plays the Perez Hilton party tonight, so I may try to catch her again. BTW, Perez was there, standing next to me for a little while before the show. I tried to surreptitiously snap the photo below, but don't think I was all that stealth. It's a terrible photo, but I think you can tell it's him.

I felt a little guilty about calling it quits early, got home around midnight. But then I realized I had been out since 9am. For Saturday, I'm going to try to catch Okkervil River, Soundtrack of our Lives, some Electric Touch and SPEAK, if all goes well. Might swing by the Rachael Ray Party. See you out there.

SXSW is really a commitment. There are shows around the clock, and you've got to get up pretty early in the morning for some performances. I didn't. Every year, I hope to make it to the KGSR Four Seasons morning broadcasts, but every year, I sleep in. I couldn't even get it going in time to see Old 97's at 8:30am, and you know how much I like them. I did managed to scurry out of my home in time to catch a bit of Rhett and Murry at their KUT set at the Hilton though (9:45am, a little better).

Then it was on to the Convention Center to see some shows on the day stage. It's a great way to see a happening band without all the crowds and late-night mayhem. I finally got to see Fitz and the Tantrums, who are great and have played a million shows this week. Really an amazing fun act. I also caught a bit of the Black Angels and Black Joe Lewis in there, too (apparently, having the word "black" in your name is a good strategy. Think about it). I even caught a really cool panel while I was in there on engaging super fans as a marketing amplifier.

Then it was the last SX performances of Old 97's, the Brooklyn Vegan party at Barbarella and then a quick hike to Maggie Mae's for a Rhett/Murry duo. I could have called it quits right there and been content, but there's more to come for Friday night. Stay tuned.

Thursday night was a big night, featuring 2 of my favorites, back to back. Quiet Company at The Marq (where coincidentally they played for a party I helped put together for Interactive on Sunday night) and then the Old 97's. It wouldn't be SXSW if some legends weren't involved. Emmylou Harris was on the stage before the 97's (but I really couldn't get close enough for good photos or video) and none other than Exene Cervenka of the amazing '80s punk band X joined Rhett and crew for a rockin' Four Leaf Clover. It was an absolutely pitch-perfect night!

Wow, I can't believe how close it is. By week's end, I'll be knee deep in some heavy tech talk and networking (check out my student project sxtxstate.com and my panel Rockin' the Checkin: Location Strategies for Musicians). Check out my Interactive plan. But after that, it's music time, so I thought I'd do a quick post on some of my favorites. You can view the full schedule of acts I "plan" to see at http://austin2011.sched.org/croyal. By the way, the SCHED schedule is great, because it lists all the unofficial stuff and day parties. Use it to search any of these people and find exactly where and when they are playing.

First, for those of you from out of town, you might be interested in trying out some local acts. Maybe you won't be able to get into some of the bigger shows - and you just need want to check out some good music away from the crowds. Or you just want to see what all the "Austin music fuss" is about. Here are some of the best Texas has to offer. (Plus, for you out-of-towners, I made a must-see Austin Gowalla tour).

Old 97's - duh - if you frequent this blog, you know that I enjoy some Old 97's and Rhett Miller from time to time. They're from Dallas, but they get to Austin on a pretty regular basis. If you haven't had a chance to see them, catch them here. Their showcase is at Antone's on Thursday at 12:30 am, and then they play the Brooklyn Vegan/Knitting Factory free show at Barbarella on Friday afternoon and the Gibson Guitar Showcase that day as well (Rhett and Murry).

Quiet Company - also duh - yes, you've seen them on this blog, but now take the opportunity to experience the Quiet Company magic firsthand. They play The Marq on Thursday at 11pm. They also play the super cool Awesomest Journalism Party. Ever. during Interactive, plus lots more, so check their website. Hint. They like hugs. So hug them when you see them.

Okkervil River - well, they don't just belong to us anymore, they belong to the world. But I think Okkervil still considers Austin home base. I love this band. Call it indie folk, they put on a great live show, wonderful songs with great lyrics. Apparently, they are one of those few artists that gets more than one showcase. They are on the schedule for Wed at 12:50am at Red 7 Patio and Friday at 1am at Antone's. And at least one party, something at Flamingo Cantina on Friday at 5pm.

Hayes Carll - I also love this man. Talk about clever, smart lyrics. He's of the Texas country genre, and then not, and so completely charming. Great songs, too. He'll be playing from his new one KMAG YOYO. He's at a party at Swan Dive on Wed at 3pm, and his showcase is gonna be cool, at the new Moody Theater on Friday at 9pm.

The Black Angels - I haven't seen them before, but boy do they rock on CD. So, join me in taking this chance to check them out. Love the song "Telephone." Their showcase is at La Zona Rosa on Wed at 11pm. Oh wait, they also play Sat night at Cedar Street at midnight. Then some day things - the day stage in the Conv. Center on Friday at noon and the KEXP showcase at Mellow Johnny's on Thurs. afternoon.

Electric Touch - big fun. They're a rockin' band that's a throwback to the garage era. Great delivery of some fantastic songs. They play Stubbs at 8:30pm on Saturday.

SPEAK - This Austin pop band will have you dancing around, even if you hate dancing. You won't be able to help yourself. Check out the peppy tune Carrie. They are on Saturday at 8pm at Red 7.

Li'l Cap'n Travis - These guys are quintessential Austin. Some of the most talented musicians in town, playing original music you will love. They are of the Hole in the Wall crew, but play Momo's at 10:30pm on Wed for SXSW.

Pink Nasty - probably the best female singer-songwriter in town. She's got an edge that's hard to define, but masks it with sweet vocals.

Tony Scalzo - of the popular band Fastball, Tony is half the legendary Scalzo/Zuniga songwriting duo. Check him out solo, joined by some talented friends.

Future Clouds and Radar - an absolute favorite of mine for years. I've been following Robert Harrison since his days in Cotton Mather. He's an original, has written some of my all-time favorite songs.

Mother Truckers - this high energy country band will blow your mind. It's great beer-drinking music.

And then the rest, non-local acts that are must-sees for me. Check the SCHED for your chance to see these people, many of whom are playing multiple times during the week.

Dan Wilson - I've loved him since Trip Shakespeare, then Semisonic. Such a talented guy, having won a Grammy for his work with the Dixie Chicks and now is lighting up the charts with an Adele song. An amazing talent. Can't wait to see him again. The picture to the left is circa 1998, when I saw Semisonic at AstroWorld in Houston.

Liz Phair - Another who I've loved forever. You couldn't claim indie-chick status in the '90s without the full Liz Phair catalog in your CD collection. She rocks.

Fitz and the Tantrums - you've heard them. They're hot. They're playing all over town.

Bright Eyes and The Strokes are the big bands at Auditorium Shores, if you like crowds, that's where they will be. And, I just heard that Foo Fighters are playing the MTVU Woodie Awards at the Music Hall. They are also premiering a documentary in the film fest.

I saw John Vanderslice a couple years ago at ACL. In the rain. Pouring rain. During the Mud Fest of 2009. It was amazing. Sounds like he's playing several shows and parties this year.

Also saw City and Colour at ACL, not raining. But they were still awesome. Pretty vocals, great songs.

Smoking Popes - I love when the throwbacks show up. Another great band from the '90s. You've more than likely heard Need You Around. And Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark? If You Leave is an '80s classic! Pretty in Pink.

Duran Duran - are you kidding me? I'll be there, and looking forward to their SXSW talk, too.

Soundtrack of our Lives - I've seen them at ACL, SXSW, Waterloo Records - a spectacle to behold. They're a straight up rock band from Sweden, and I just love their song Sister Surround.

Sondre Lerche is a fantastic Norwegian singer-songwriter. He did an amazing rendition of The Ballad of El Goodo during the Alex Chilton tribute last year.

And last, but not least, Exene Cervenka, half of the duo known as X, one of the most influential punk bands of the '80s. A legend.

Sorry that it has been so long since I've done an interview. Where does the time go? But I finally got motivated when I ran into Craig Marshall at some shows a few weeks ago. Craig is an Austin singer-songwriter who has worked on several projects, including the jazz combo Lucky Strikes and his own solo pop music. He's known as a prolific songwriter and you'll often see him out at shows supporting other Austin artists. Enjoy learning more about his background and inspirations.

Wrapping up my week in rock was four acts, one night. I accompanied a student to interview Troy Campbell about his SXSW panel, and he was discussing his House of Songs project, a collaboration of Austin and Danish musicians. We went to Antone's to see Jens Lysdal, one of the Danish partners in the project, after the interview. Jens is an amazingly talented musician and the House of Songs is a wonderful endeavor. Check out the next showcase.

Next up, I headed over to Stubbs, seemingly to see Future Clouds and Radar. But when I arrived, Dark Water Hymnal was playing, and I noticed that one of my former students, Andrea Couch, was the violinist. Yay Andrea! She's extremely talented and the band is great. Check them out.

Then it was Future Clouds and Radar, a local favorite, featuring Robert Harrison, and now including my friends Joe Reyes and Jason Garcia - truly a power lineup.

Another local band, Wiretree, closed out the show. I hadn't seen them before and was impressed. A great lineup for the evening! So, that concludes my pre-SXSW workout. I think I'm ready. Check in here during that week for coverage of music.

Quiet Company and Fastball, Mohawk, Feb. 10, 2011

I think it shows true dedication when you go to an outside show in sub-freezing weather, a true commitment to the art of fandom, right? That's what happened when two of my local faves played Mohawk this Thursday. Not sure who thought it would be great to book the outdoor stage in early Feb., but it was still a great time. The bands powered through with frosty fingers and tune-challenged equipment - but both giving an enthusiastic performance to a pretty sizable crowd.

Let's just chalk this up to one of the craziest things I've ever done. Late last year, when Evan Dando and Juliana Hatfield started playing shows together, I would have given anything to see them. But it was a bad time, couldn't get away. When they announced new shows in January, I had to find a way to get to one. I decided on a one-night-only trip to NYC to catch their set at the Bell House in Brooklyn. They are really two of my favorite artists, been following since the early '90s. I've seen each a few times, but never together. A couple decades ago, they were the hot, indie couple, an alterna-version of Kurt (Cobain) and Courtney (Love). It was one of the most delightful things I've seen. The acoustic duo was relaxed and playful, but not corny. It was like watching a couple of friends playing guitar at their house. These two have known each other for decades, have been through a lot, and there's something really nice about seeing people who have managed to weather the storm and still end up friends. I hope this collaboration continues. I want to see them again.

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper opened. She was a good accompanying act, rockin' on the solo electric guitar.

It was totally worth the crazy, hectic, freezing cold, quick trip! My life is complete ;-) Enjoy the multitude of video I shot!

When my friend Greg said he was in town for the night, it was the perfect excuse to check out the scene on a Monday. Austin didn't disappoint, with multiple great acts to catch early in the week. Our first stop was Saxon Pub for Bob Schneider. He's been doing this gig on and off for more than a decade, always packed, always different, always fun. We ran into some of the gang from Texas Music, so it was a big time. Bob plays around Austin a lot, so be sure to check him out sometime.

Then later it was off to Momo's to catch the rest of Johnny Goudie's solo set. He was joined by some friends at times, making for a relaxed and sincere performance.

Free Week w Quiet Company, Sheboygan and the Dead Left, Jan 5, 2011

Ah, it's that time of year that all the hip kids look forward to, not Christmas or their birthday, but Free Week - light on the pocketbook, but big on fun. All the bars on Red River host tons of bands all for the price of $0. It's a great way to get out and hear some new music or catch up with your favorites. I made it out last night to two shows, one an official free week show, and an unofficial one at Hole in the Wall, who secretly scoffs at Free Week, because they have been hosting free music for years.

My pics at Quiet Company didn't turn out great, due to the stage lighting and my inability to improve my location due to the crowd. But I got some good video and it was a great time, a very high energy show.

With barely a moment to spare in 2010, here's my year in music, a review of highlights from my favorite shows, including ACL Festival and SXSW. It features Old 97's, Quiet Company, Phoenix, Joseph Arthur, Evan Dando, Ben Kweller, Spoon, Hold Steady, Pixies, The National, Salim Nourallah, Johnny Goudie, Household Names, Jay Farrar and Ben Gibbard and many more. Of course, you can see more from all these shows on the individual posts on this site, but if you just have about 20 minutes to spare, this should give you a good idea of the great year I had. I'm really glad I do these year-end compilations because I love going back to review them. Great friends, great times, great memories. Maybe you were at some of these shows?!

Old 97's and Quiet Company at KGSR Anniversary Party

As if I wrote a letter to Santa, and he booked the gig himself, the KGSR 20th Anniversary Party featured not just one, but two, of my favorite bands - Old 97's and Quiet Company. The lineup also included Austin's big breakout act of the year Alpha Rev and the legendary Joe Ely, making it one of the strongest anniversary shows that station has pulled together in years. Add to that free barbecue from Salt Lick and lots of good friends, and you just couldn't ask for a better Christmas. If you didn't make it, check the station's Web site, as they live streamed the event and may be posting excerpts. But here are some images and video that I took at the show.

We ran a little promo with Gowalla with great success - 33 check ins with photos, and everyone getting a free download from both the 97's and Quiet Co. Look for more Gowalla promos from these bands soon.

Fun Fun Fun Fest, Waterloo Park, Nov. 7, 2010

I wrapped up Fun Fun Fun by catching the last two acts on Sunday, The Hold Steady - great band that I had not seen live before, and The Descendents, the reunion of the legendary punk band. The Hold Steady didn't disappoint, with a high energy show. And The Descendents closed things out to a rowdy audience. I did sneak a peek at Mastodon on the Black stage just before I left, too.

It was a great weekend of music, friends, great weather and good times. Can't wait 'til next year!

Fun Fun Fun Fest, Waterloo Park, Nov. 6, 2010

The beautiful weekend continues with a packed house on Saturday for a slew of indie bands, culminating with major acts Dirty Projectors and MGMT. But if indie, synth pop isn't your thing, you could walk about 50 feet and catch Gwar, the Richmond, VA-based costume, metal band. And if you're a little more retro, there was 90's punk crew Bad Religion. It was quite a spectacle. Great day and a great time.

Looking forward to today's big finish with Hold Steady and the Descendents reunion!

OK, so I didn't get that close to the stage for Gwar. Costumed bands scare me a little.

Weird Al and Apples in Stereo at Fun Fun Fun Fest

Just a few weeks after ACL Festival and it's perfect weather in Central Texas, so why not throw another music fest? That's exactly what happens at Fun Fun Fun Fest. In Waterloo Park, it's a bit smaller than ACL, but in no way lacking in talent and diversity of acts. Adding a opening night, Friday showcased some great acts. I caught Apples in Stereo, a band I had been hearing about for longer than a decade. Dallas musician John Dufilho is now on board with them as drummer, so it was the perfect excuse to get out to see them. Wow, they're a great pop band, with amazing songs and perfect vocals. I will be downloading their new record asap.

Then it was Weird Al Yankovic, another act I'd never seen before, but had of course heard of for probably about 2 decades. It was a fun show, lots of costume changes and multimedia. It really picked up toward the end with Eat It, Amish Paradise and Craigslist. There were some recent medleys which included Gaga and Bieber. All in all, a very entertaining evening.

I'm headed out there today, to catch some acts that are new to me, then the Gypsy Picnic Food Trailer Fest, then back to FFF for MGMT. See you out there.

Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear - Washington, DC

I was lucky enough to be planning a trip to DC (for Online News Association - which was fantastic) when Jon Stewart announced the Rally for Sanity (or Colbert's March for Fear), which means I already had travel plans, hotel booked, etc. So, it was pretty perfect. You can see pics from the insane event. So many people in one place. I've never seen anything like it. I got lucky when the rally started and found my spot on the side that allowed me to take some great pics of Stewart/Colbert.

Didn't really get to see Jeff Tweedy, but he was there, performing with Mavis Staples. And, I'd already left my spot before Ozzy and Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) took the stage. But it was super exciting to be part of this event. Jon's closing speech was spot on. I think he reflects how most American's feel. I love that the day was mostly full of fun, but he pulled it together, in only the way he can, with sincerity, humor and intelligence. We are lucky to have Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert to help us make sense out of the insanity of political discourse.

You'd think a free show would bring out the masses for an Old 97's show, right in downtown Austin on a lovely night. But it ended up being a nice intimate group of fans, since Cuervo didn't really get the word out about their event. Regardless, the guys put on a great show and everyone there was a hardcore fan, singing along with every word, some even knowing the new songs from the CD that came out just last week.

Rumor has it, they'll be back in December. So, catch them when they come to town again.

They just released The Grand Theatre: Vol. 1 last week, so you'd think the 97's would be taking some time off from recording. Not hardly. They're back in the studio this week, hard at work on Volume II, which should be out in May, just in time for some breezy, summer listening. They're working with some of the songs from the original sessions, and adding a few more. Catch them live this weekend in Carrollton on Friday and at the Cuervo Games in Austin on Saturday.

By the way, if you do the Gowalla thing, look for Old 97's events at those shows and check in and share photos. If you don't do Gowalla, you should. Download it on your smartphone today.

Old 97s Day in Austin, Oct. 13, 2010

The Old 97s visited Austin a day after the release of their newest, The Grand Theatre Vol. 1 to play not one, but two shows, making this a "best-day-ever" scenario for me. The first was an instore at Waterloo Records, where they played new and a few old to a big crowd. Then later, they hit the Ghost Room for a special KGSR Listeners Private Party. The room was full of fans who loved the new material and screamed the lyrics of the old. It was a lovely day!

So with ACL Fest and last minute access to The National taping on Monday, along with this fantastic day, I'm a little beat, but exceedingly happy :-)

ACL Festival, Day 3, Oct. 10, 2010

It's hard to believe, after all the anticipation, that another ACL Festival is in the bag. This was probably the best weather weekend we've had, even though temps on Sat and Sun were a little higher midday than most of us would like. I saw some favorite bands on Sunday, including Shearwater, White Rabbits, SPEAK, Midlake, Band of Horses, Flaming Lips, The National... I mean, really... what a hipster fest. These are some of the hottest indie acts around. Of course, the was the big headliner, the legendary Eagles, who basically played hits non-stop for two hours while 50,000 people sang along.

Aside from the lack of wireless throughout the weekend, it was basically a perfect event. Given that most people wanted to share their pics, comments and general enthusiasm for the event, you'd think they'd work this problem out by now. But that's a minor complaint, with such great music all around. I guess I'll be buying my tickets for 2011 soon :-)

ACL Festival, Day 2, Oct. 9, 2010

Day 2 was fantastic, starting things off with an amazing set by Pete Yorn. I've seen him many, many times, but this is probably the best he's been. Great band, really tight, love the new songs, his voice was strong. The crowd was singing along with the ones they knew, and loved the ones they didn't. It was quite a moving set, the crowd fixated on him for this early afternoon show. Really, go see him, when he comes to your town. This man is on, really at the top of his game.

ACL Festival, Day1, Oct. 8, 2010

It's here folks: ACL Festival, the thing we wait for the minute SXSW closes. Day 1 was lovely, and the rest of the weekend seems to be shaping up to be one of the best weather weekends we have had. I started the morning at Threadgills for the KGSR series, hoping to catch Local Natives and Britt Daniel before entering Zilker. Local Natives was a no-show and Britt only played one song (but that song was good).

Oh well, then on to the important business of the day, securing basecamp. We got a nice spot for our group, then on to the traditional first Chicken Cone from Hudson's Mighty Cone.

I saw Charlie Mars, Ponderosa, Verve Pipe (who play for kids these days), Black Keys (who were great, but I failed to bring my camera to their stage), and Spoon, caught a bit of the Strokes from afar and listened to Vampire Weekend from basecamp. A great first day. Enjoy some of the sights and sounds.

Pixies, Austin Music Hall, Sept. 21, 2010

I've seen some legendary bands in my day, but few are as legendary as the Pixies. It's hard to believe that Doolittle came out more than 20 years ago, but the music still sounds fresh and relevant. While some of their songs have morphed into pop anthems (Here Comes Your Man and Monkey Gone to Heaven, for 2 examples), they remain a hard-edge punk band at the core. Loud and awesome. Every band since them has borrowed a bass line from Kim Deal. And, to this day, no one is like them. What a fantastic show.

And because I live in Austin, I was able to drop by the Belmont on my way to the Pixies show and catch a few songs by Platinum-selling, '90s icons Fastball. Just another day in the music city :-) They sounded great, drew a big crowd.

Salim Nourallah Previews Hit Parade, Sessions at OTN # 17, Aug. 8, 2010

I love when I get the opportunity to take Sessions on the road, and when I heard that Salim Nourallah was returning to Texas Treefort Studio to work on his own album, I jumped at the chance to visit this special place again. I had been out there in June to interview Rhett Miller about the forthcoming Old 97's CD The Grand Theatre (out on Oct. 12) and had an amazing time exploring this remote, vintage studio. This time out, Salim had assembled a superstar team, including Joe Reyes (Buttercup), John Dufilho (Apples in Stereo, Deathray Davies, I Love Math), Jason Garner (every band you like, including I Love Math and Buttercup) and Richard Martin, and Rip Rowan, all handily assisted by studio engineer Jim Vollentine. Learn more about the CD and how it was funded by fans through Pledge Music on the video.

The interesting thing as I talked to everyone was the theme of the bond across a community of musicians, the ways they work together, share and create are truly inspirational. And the results are stellar. The day I was there, they were working on a song called "The Quitter," which you can hear in the background. The opening and closing song is called "Unstoppable" and that's a finished track, and there's a snippet of "38 Rue de Sevigne" as Salim wrote it in Paris, as it was being filmed by his then 6-year-old son Gavin. Look for a release of what is tentatively titled Hit Parade late this year or early next.

A long time ago, before I ever moved to Austin, there was a band called Cotton Mather. I heard them one day on public radio as I was driving around Houston. They were doing an interview and live performance on-air, and I immediately loved them. That might have been the been the beginning of my love for all things Austin and the tiny seed that started my ultimate move here. I saw them at SXSW that year, and then covered them for Texas Music when I did finally arrive. After a great run and some notable references (Oasis was a fan), they suddenly disbanded, leaving fans wondering if they'd ever hear those songs live again.

Years later, Cotton Mather's front man, Robert Harrison, started a new band, Future Clouds and Radar, and they are really amazing. Two CDs and one on the way, they move things beyond the alterna-pop of his previous group. Psychedelic at times, rockin' - Robert is truly a talented guy. And, we all moved on from Cotton Mather. But recently, I had heard that Robert had been adding some Cotton Mather tunes to his set, so I had to check it out. The rumors were true, and Future Clouds (with special guest Joe Reyes of Buttercup) played two CM songs and Robert announced that he was re-releasing Kon Tiki, one of Cotton Mather's great albums. Oh joy! This is really great news and a day I thought would never come. So, please, check out Robert, Future Clouds (with amazing musicians Darin Murphy, Hollie Thomas and Rusty Gebhard) and Cotton Mather!

Openers Hilary York (with whom Joe Reyes also played) and Miranda Dodson were also great. The ND has become my new favorite venue. Quite a nice space, good sound.

Holy Janet Comes on Waves

Ben Kweller's lived in Austin for a couple years now, but it's still a treat when he plays for the local audience. The packed crowd at Threadgill's was filled with hardcore fans that sang along to every song. Kweller fronted a solid 3-piece band that played songs from throughout his career, from Sha Sha to his most recent Changing Horses. Sounds like Ben is working on some new stuff, so look for that in the near future.

Trip to NYC + Rhett Miller show = perfect vacation. I was able to sneak away just before the semester begins to take in some sights in the Big Apple and the see Rhett perform at City Winery. It was a nice, intimate venue with a large crowd. Rhett played Old 97's songs, including a few of the new ones off of the yet unreleased The Grand Theatre Volume I (look for it Oct. 12), as well as some of his solo tunes. Plus, a special guest, Tracy Bonham, joined him on stage. Opening was Harper Simon, and he's got a famous dad. You may have heard of Paul... So, it was a star-studded night and a great week!

This statue was at the World Trade Center. Had been there for more than 30 years. It was damaged during the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, and sits in Battery Park as a temporary memorial of the vent.

I always love to look at the water from Battery Park. Nice place to sit. Plus it reminds me of Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan ;-)

I took the Staten Island Ferry, which is free and a great ride, and got a few pics of the Statue of Liberty and the NYC skyline. A very nice trip.

Most bands dream of playing the iconic ACL stage, and now more will be able to, because ACL is hosting Satellite Sets, performances to be hosted on the Web. Last night, Quiet Company got the chance, and they had a big crowd for this special occasion, lots of singing along and participation. The band looked and sounded great. I can't wait to see the video once it's posted on the site.

Round up of Old 97's New Songs

As most of you know, the Old 97's are readying a new album, which is now planned to come out in not one, but two volumes. The first is scheduled for October 12. The 97's have been out on the road, touring behind their great covers CD Mimeograph, but have been playing some of the new songs. Through the magic of the Internet and widely available video technology, I thought I'd put together a round up of videos of the new songs.

And, if you haven't already watched, check out my interview with Rhett. He tells stories behind the songs and plays a few previews. It's fun to watch as these songs develop before the CDs are released.

Shearwater at ACL Studios, then The Steps at Parish, July 16, 2010

KUT has been hosting music Live at ACL Studios as fundraising events for the past year or so. On Friday night, it was Shearwater, and there's no better way to see this group. The sound was perfect and it was a great way to really focus on the performance, which included guitars and drums, of course, but also standup bass, violin, keyboards, xylophone, various percussion instruments and some sort of an electronic plank. It's really hard to categorize, a moody introspective sound with lots of hope. Lead singer Jonathan Meiburg said it best in that it's a "go to sleep, wake up, go to sleep again" delivery. Formed with former members of Okkervil River, Shearwater reminds me a little of Midlake, but with different intensity. You really have to see them to appreciate it.

Then it was on to the Parish for the Steps, for their EP release, Flight Path. They were in rockin' form. Another great night in Austin.

With Dallas being just a short Amtrak trip away, I couldn't resist taking my last weekend before summer school begins to take in an Old 97's show. They played at Taste of Dallas, amongst all the finest foods of the city, to an enthusiastic and sweaty crowd - the band got rather soggy, too. They're on the road touring their recent release of Mimeograph, a covers EP. Great time, met up with lots of fans, both old and new friends.

Here are a few pics from last night's Austin City Limits taping with Spoon. One of the great things about living in Austin (and there are many) is being able to attend an ACL taping. So, with some assistance from Texas Music, Leslie Nichols and Austin's Pizza, some tickets came through for me at the 11th hour! I was ecstatic. The show was great. The band sounded awesome, and looked cool, as you can tell from these photos. Charlie Sexton dropped in to join them on one song, too. What a night! The show will air on KLRU in October. Can't wait to see it.

Afterward, went over to Hole in the Wall, and saw one of my favorite local artists, Pink Nasty. She's great. Great billing - all female-fronted bands, including White Dress and Disappearing Twins. They rocked. Enjoy the photos and vids.

Another great billing for this holiday show - local darlings Quiet Company opening for the talented and versatile Bob Schneider. And, my first trip to Nutty Brown, believe it or not. It was quite a lovely place, nice stage and good space with tables and open areas for standing or chairs. A delightful way to spend the 4th, fireworks and all!
